In love with the world of Business Intelligence
Where the (pre) love for data originated
Are we looking through rose-colored glasses? No, in BI, we look forward through the rearview mirror. That is our motto. With Business Intelligence we unlock and translate data into relevant insights and predictability. Colleague Stephanie Teunisse thinks BI is the perfect combination of creativity and numbers. After her Microsoft Azure Data & AI Track at the Techionista Academy, she joined us as a Business Intelligence Consultant. Stephanie: “My 'relationship' with BI is currently still in the 'honeymoon', so I'm currently still seeing everything through those rose-colored glasses/rearview mirror. I'm in my element when I can structure apparent chaos (my friends also call me smurf because of my blue nature). I'm creative and pragmatic when it comes to coming up with solutions, and I think that's where the love for data was born”.
Xander Kuiper? Our CTO first came into contact with Microsoft SQL Server and the Report module in MS Access in 2002 in a first data visualization assignment shortly after his graduation. We are looking for the story behind the data. After his education, Stephan wanted to 'do something with IT' and that dream came true.
Alla, who also started with us from the Techionista Academy, says there was no other option for her than falling in love with data. Why? “There are so many challenges and brain stimuli that I have to solve that puzzle for myself over and over again”.
Why we're still in love with BI
Xander: “Based on data, I help organizations convert them into information, knowledge and insights. Call it steering information. The most important thing is that organizations can make thorough choices about their business operations. Why I'm still in love with the world of BI? It's no longer just about numbers. It's the wonderful world where Data Engineering and Data Analysis come together. Where we work with Power BI, finance and marketing tools, we need to be compliant with the GDPR, we go from a Data Warehouse to Data Lake and where, just like we are used to from the cloud world, we try to automate everything as much as possible. A challenging field that colleagues at TeamValue will stay in love with for a long time. Tip from Xander: Guy in a Cube (Power BI Training and More).
Why Stephan is still in love with BI? “Because data is simply fantastic, it can tell you everything, but you have to make it available in a good way. The data is always there, the shape and technology around it are constantly changing. This puzzle is fun to make and you are always faced with a new challenge”.
When we ask Dorien why she has a crush on BI? “Buttons. At home, I was the one who installed and tuned radios and televisions. In a more recent past, I've taken projects such as standardizing book metadata for granted. Without good descriptive data about books, a book cannot be found in online bookstores. And a Saturday without sudoku from de Volkskrant is a day gone by”.
We can still tap into so many sources to enrich data. At the same time, we need to be even more careful when it comes to using data, especially consumer data. By smashing all customer journeys with data, you may be taking away human judgment. Should you want that? Fun issues to keep us busy with! Tips from Dorien? “I follow the trade association for data-driven marketing (DDMA) about, for example, the consequences of first party cookies. In addition, I now read (or listen) to the books “Socrates on sneakers” (Elke Wis), “Data Power and Counterforce” (Kathelijne Buitenweg) and the “Dataloog” podcast sometimes also has interesting data use cases”.
