The importance of details

As a Business Intelligence Consultant, I am currently working on a client assignment where I can use all my technical knowledge to help the customer team improve their data platform and provide their stakeholders with what they really need. Together with the team, we are working on the way-of-work (The Golden Path) and its implementation, so that they can apply it themselves soon when we are gone.

I gained most of the technical knowledge from my assignment for this. Here I worked on our own product: the Data Hub and associated management reports. I've spent a lot of time unlocking and visualizing data that is necessary for data-driven decision making. This gave me a super wide range of tasks and responsibilities. Actually, I was busy with all the things that occur during the project. Where I got a lot of value from thinking analytically and paying attention to details. This is very important when it comes to solving data issues.

For each assignment, we kick off the day with a daily. Here we discuss all relevant issues for the day, and I also speak to my colleagues in the TeamValue data team on a daily basis. We share an awful lot with each other. Professional, but sometimes also privately. This ensures a pleasant and familiar work environment.

Over the past two years, I've noticed that I've really grown in my role as a consultant through the sharing of knowledge from my colleagues. Last year, for example, my senior colleagues taught a course focused on SQL Fundamentals. This year, Data Modeling and Data Storytelling are on the program.

No more reinventing the wheel every time

In the previous project, I was very happy when we set up an official logical data model. This allowed us to generate the data marts. This means that we have a “single point of fact” from which all reports arise. As a result, we don't have to reinvent the wheel every time, which saves us and will save us a huge amount of time.

We partly achieved this success by applying 'Doing the right things'. Speed was a major requirement in this project. But because in the past, quick solutions were mainly sought, the solutions made were not sustainable. Our team has focused on doing the right things within a short time frame. This meant that we went back to basics, so that we now have a foundation on which to build data marts for reporting in a reliable and sustainable way.

A sense of family

TeamValue feels like a close home base, a kind of family. Now, we also call ourselves “Ohana” (which means family). But that's what it really feels like. I have very nice colleagues, who, in addition to a lot of knowledge, also have a lot of fun. This ensures that I can challenge myself and go the extra mile.
