Techs vs. non-techs

Simply put, a tech at our company is someone who understands, touches, and writes code, uses it to implement smart automations, and builds business-critical applications. A non-tech is someone who doesn't touch code but performs non-IT tasks while still working with the systems. Think of our agile transformation team, office management, marketing, sales, etc. Tech or non-tech? It’s important to speak the same language, get excited about the same values, and work toward a common goal. Everyone who starts at TeamValue gets a kick out of this comparison. We even wrote a LinkedIn post about it. But what does that collaboration actually look like, and how do non-techs experience working in a tech-focused company?

Working at an IT consultancy

Working as an Account Manager, Office Manager, or Online Marketer at TeamValue means being in a support role—what we call our internal backbone. Alongside our tech colleagues (Cloud Engineers, Software Developers, and Business Intelligence Consultants), we non-techs work closely with each other and with our IT pros. Is working at an IT consultancy a conscious choice for non-techs? For Hans, not really; for Maria, yes. Maria comes from the IT industry and was looking for a role in a similar company. But both Hans and Maria were primarily drawn to the way we work at TeamValue: the family culture, the opportunity to help build and develop the organization, and the team collaboration. Hans adds:

"In the past, as an Account Manager, I was used to the time/material model of interim management and consultancy firms. It was a breath of fresh air to see and feel how we do things differently at TeamValue. Here, the focus isn't on billing as many hours as possible, but on truly adding value for our clients. There’s a deep level of teaming with both colleagues and client stakeholders, which creates a shared responsibility for the results."

That’s exactly what Maria loves about it. "I’m involved in everything from A to Z regarding office support and HR. Invoicing, onboarding new employees, HR policy, setting up new systems—you name it. Ops isn't limited to just one specialization. Never a dull moment!"

For Malique, working in IT was definitely a conscious choice. "Developments move fast here, colleagues quickly see the value of (content) marketing, there are plenty of updates to share, and there are great stories to tell. You also get into the tech side of a marketing role pretty quickly. New projects involve campaigns, data, and setting up new systems." What else does she love about her job as a non-tech in IT? (Technical) highlights of the past year

In a fast-moving world, we share best practices, failures, and successes with each other. What have been the highlights for Maria, Hans, and Malique so far?

For Maria, her time here has been one highlight after another. She’s involved in many new solutions, has seen a good number of new colleagues join, and in her role as Office Manager, she can really drive change. That’s not the case everywhere. "Often, it’s just about execution. But here, I found the combination of depth and genuine team spirit I was looking for at TeamValue."

For Hans, it’s the balance between responsibility and freedom he has in his role as Account Manager. A personal highlight was going to the PEC Zwolle vs. Ajax match with a few clients. It wasn't just the game that brought our partners out, but the chance to show appreciation for the way we collaborate and our commitment to results. "Our model of Customer Intimacy suits me very well," says Hans.

Malique agrees with Hans and Maria and adds: "More than ever, I have a blank slate here where I can plan, execute, and pivot. Literally, no two days are the same, and I thrive on that. Like many of my other colleagues, I don't necessarily love routine, and who knows, maybe in the future I'll go for a double sticker on my laptop..."
